My Weight Loss Breakthrough:
I never thought that I would ever have to go through a weight loss program. I have always been in great shape. From when I was a kid and teenager to young adult I have always been doing a lot of sports. Soccer was my main thing, but I did both running and weight training as well. So I have never been fat or overweight in my life. That changed when I worked in an office building where we had our own lunch buffet! I cannot blame the lunch buffet for me gaining weight. There were different factors involved. At this time I was actually a member of a gym, but because of my busy work load I basically never went there. Many times I just ate pastries for breakfast. For lunch I ate a king’s lunch. I always had too much on my plate. Usually I ate pizza for dinner and drank a lot of coke. So as you can see I did not have good eating habits. No exercise and awful eating habits made me gain 12 kilos within a couple of years. Getting rid of these kilos was harder than gaining them, but it was a great experience.
I looked at a picture of myself, and I did not recognize the man in the picture… but it was myself! Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I was shocked to see how much weight I gained in just two, short years. I hated it. I knew I was in bad shape and I got so exhausted by running just a little bit. I knew I had to do something dramatic and do it now! If I continued down this track I was seriously afraid that I would end up fatter and with other physical complications. So something had to change.
So my dramatic weight loss plan started that very same day. I started to bike/spin in the gym every evening of the week for 45 minutes each training. After the exercise and shower, I drank one large glass of cold water just before bedtime. At this time I also did 50 pushups. I did this almost every evening for 6 weeks. I just want to point out that I did the exercise after dinner. My dinner was no longer pizzas. Together with some friends, we cooked real meals in actually good large portions. But they was healthy with lots of protein and salad.
In the morning I just ate a small portion of oatmeal with milk after I drank a glass of water. I did not eat any snacks in the morning, just an apple once in a while. For lunch I still ate in the restaurant with the grand lunch buffet. But I decided to eat just a small piece of full corn bread with some meat or cheese on. I drank two large glasses of water with this meal. I grabbed a few digestive cookies to keep for later in the afternoon as a healthy snack. After lunch I had time in my work schedule to have a 30 minute walk. And then back to work for a few more hours. I must admit that I felt hungry between 4 to 6pm. So I had to drink water or tea to suppress my hunger. At 6pm I ate dinner with my friends and many times we even had a small dessert. I drank both lemon juice and water with this meal. And then around 9-10pm I went to the gym and did my 45 min biking and spinning.
In these six weeks I stayed away from alcohol and drank lots of water. And walked a lot. Every week I could see that I lost weight. I checked myself in the mirror after workout and I could literally see that I lost fat on my belly. That gave me so much motivation to continue and after six weeks I reached my goal.
After losing 12 kilos of fat, I started to exercise with weight training, but continued with my strict diet and exercise routine. My eating habits and exercise habits had changed.
