(NaturalNews) Identifying the presence of genetically-modified (GM) contaminants in food and food crops could soon become a whole lot easier and more accurate. Researchers from Lumora, a molecular diagnostics specialist company originating out of Cambridge University, have developed a unique method of illuminating and analyzing DNA strands that allows them to detect GM contaminants at levels as low as 0.1 percent, which is an astoundingly accurate rate.

Published in the journal BMC Biotechnology, a breakthrough new study explains how a combination of bioluminescence and isothermal amplification technology allows analysts to amplify DNA strands at a constant temperature, and generate real-time readouts of GM contamination levels in food and food crops. And the best part is that mobile devices equipped with the technology can essentially perform these scans and analyses on the fly.

The company's bioluminescent real time reporter (BART) component utilizes luciferase, the same enzyme in fireflies that allows them to light up. This system, which won Lumora an award from the U.K. Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), produces light at variant levels in the presence of DNR or RNA sequences that contain GM contamination, and it does this in combination with a system known as loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP).

"This method requires only basic equipment for DNA extraction and a constant temperature for DNA amplification and detection," said Dr. Guy Kiddle, lead author of the study, about the technology. "Consequently LAMP-BART provides a 'field-ready' solution for monitoring GM crops and their interaction with wild plants or non-GM crops."

What this all means for the general public is that, should mandatory GM labeling laws eventually be passed in your state or, in a best-case scenario nationwide, scanning food and crops for GM contaminants will be simple and and highly-effective. The technology will also allow farmers to detect the presence of GM contamination in their fields, which could make it a lot easier for farmers to sue Monsanto and other GMO giants for trespassing.

"(LAMP-BART is) an effective and sensitive technique for GM detection with significant potential for quantification even at low levels of contamination and in samples derived from crops such as maize with a large genome size," added the researchers.

(NaturalNews)The cancer industry is closing in on baking soda and beginning to do research in earnest about sodium bicarbonate and how it is a primary tool in the treatment of fungus. Cancer is a fungus, can be caused by a fungus, or is accompanied by late-stage fungal infections, and now the Mayo Clinic confirms this. They are not the first to say so though. Many, even from the official world of orthodox oncology, recognize the similarities of cancer and fungal infections, the decay that ties these two together in a dance that all too often ends in miserable death.

The Mayo Clinic is saying that a fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract mimics cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matterand the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.

Patients with this fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

Interestingly, a few years ago researchers at Johns Hopkins were surprised that the drug itraconazole, commonly used to treat toenail fungus, can also block angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels commonly seen in cancers. Tumor angiogenesis is the proliferation of a network of blood vessels that penetrates into cancerous growths, supplying nutrients and oxygen and removing waste products. Cancer researchers studying the conditions necessary for cancer metastasis have discovered that angiogenesis is one of the critical events required for metasteses to occur. In mice induced to have excess blood vessel growth, treatment with itraconazole reduced blood vessel growth by 67% compared to placebo. "We were surprised, to say the least, that itraconazole popped up as a potential blocker of angiogenesis," says Dr. Jun O. Liu, professor of pharmacology. "We couldn't have predicted that an antifungal drug would have such a role." Itraconazole was found to reduce the numbers of circulating cancer cells, prevent the worsening of prostate cancers, and delay the need for chemotherapy. However, it has serious side effects when given in the necessary high dosages that include hypertension, low potassium levels and fluid retention. These side effects require treatment with other medications. Effects of high doses of itraconazole could lead to heart failure.

For two decades John Hopkins has recognized the increasing frequency of severe fungal infections in patients with neoplastic diseases. Most fungal infections are caused by the commonly recognized opportunistic fungi Candida spp and Aspergillus spp, and the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidiodes immitis, and less often by Blastomyces dermatidis. However, recently newer pathogens such as Pheohyphomycetes, Hyalohyphomycetes, Zygomycetes and other fungi of emerging importance such as Torulopsis glabrata, Trichosporon beigelii, Malassezia spp, Saccharomyces spp, Hansenula spp, Rhodotorula spp, and Geotrichum candidum have appeared as significant causes of infection in this patient population.

Dr. Tullio Simoncini does not say that cancer is caused by yeast; what he is telling the world is that the cancer is a yeast overgrowth. What causes the cancer (or a yeast-filled tumor) is another thing. Simoncini has always insisted that tumors are white because they are fungi. Some have made fun of him, but looking around at the extremely sparse information about the subject, I ran into one person saying:

"If someone had asked me a year ago what color the inside of a tumor was, I would have guessed red and gray. When they did the biopsy, I asked to see the tissue specimens: five quarter-inch to half-inch strings of vermicelli (Italian for little worms) with little streakings of blood. They didn't look evil to me, just strings of fat. The entire mass was white inside as the pathology report stated.

Specialists in throat and mouth cancer say that cancers can be red or white patches: any patch that appears randomly and is red or white in color could be a mouth cancer symptom. The white patches in the mouth are called leukoplakia and the red patches are called erythroplakia, which are pre-cancerous conditions. Though these red or white patches are not always cancerous, it could be the result of a fungal infection caused by Candida called thrush. Thrush will lead to a red patch that often bleeds after the white patch disappears. A small amount of this fungus lives in your mouth most of the time. It is usually kept in check by your immune system and other types of germs that also normally live in your mouth. However, when your immune system is weak, the fungus can grow.

Fungal Mycotoxins

It just so happens that a toxin produced by mold on nuts and grains can cause liver cancer, according to University of California Irvine Researchers. And a French case-control study of 1,010 breast cancer cases and 1,950 controls with nonmalignant diseases found that breast cancer was associated with increased frequency of mold-fermented cheese consumption. Fungi produce mycotoxins, which can kill us or cause cancer.

Dr. Wang and Groopman from the Environmental Health Sciences Department at Johns Hopkins published on the effects of mold toxins on DNA in Mutation Research, a leading cancer journal. They said mycotoxins with carcinogenic potency include aflatoxins, sterigmatocystin, ochratoxin, fumonisins, zearalenone, and some Penicillium toxins. Most of these carcinogenic mycotoxins are genotoxic agents. Aflatoxin is a potent genotoxic agent, is mutagenic in many model systems and produces chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, sister chromatid exchange, unscheduled DNA synthesis, and chromosomal strand breaks. Most strikingly, the relationship between aflatoxin exposure and development of human hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) is demonstrated by studies.

Harrison et al. (1993) examined human breast cancer tissue for evidence of the presence of aflatoxin. The researchers examined human DNA from a variety of tissues and organs to identify and quantify aflatoxin DNA-adducts. Such adducts are considered to be proof of the mycotoxin's presence in a particular tissue. Aflatoxins may in fact be a risk factor for cancer induction in a variety of organs in man, in the same manner as that of cigarette smoking.

DNA from normal and tumorous tissue obtained from patients with cancer of the breast was examined. Tumor tissues had higher aflatoxin-adduct levels than did normal tissue from the same individual. The result of this study verifies the presence of carcinogenic aflatoxin within the cancer tissue and thus implicates aflatoxin as a cause of breast cancer. That is the same as saying cancer is a fungus or is caused by a fungus and this is what Dr. Simoncini has been saying all along.

Intensive Care Units are particularly on alert with immunocompromised and oncology patients for fungal infections. "Patients with brain tumors used to have a life expectancy of 3-12 months, but better treatment has allowed them to live a bit longer," said Brenda Shelton, clinical nurse specialist at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. "The last two brain tumor ICU patients we treated died of infection, not of their disease. One patient had a rare fungus, and the other had candidemia. Years ago, you would not see most of these fungal infections in patients with brain tumors because they would not live long enough."

"The biggest misconception is the belief that fungal infections are rare," Shelton said. "Another misconception is fungal infections are like every other severe infection. They are harder to manage, harder to eradicate and more frequent than people realize." One of the most common complications involved in treating patients with hematologic cancer is fungal infections.

Aspergillus niger fungal infection in human lungs produces large amounts of oxalic acid, which is extremely toxic to the blood vessels and which may cause fatal pulmonary hemorrhages. Consequently, oxalic acid (calcium oxalate crystals) in the sputum or lung specimens of patients is also an indication of an Aspergillus infection of the lung. These calcium oxalate crystals are the same as the calcium oxalate found in breast cancers. The presence of oxalates in the breast is indicative of the presence of fungi interwoven within the stages of breast cancer development. Since humans do not make oxalic acid themselves, this is an appropriate conclusion.

Dr. Robert Young states, "Bacteria, yeast/fungi, and mold are not the cause of a cancerous condition but are the result and the evidence of cells and tissues biologically transforming from a healthy state and to an unhealthy state." Dr. Young astutely observed that, "over-acidification of the body leads to the development of chronic yeast and fungal infections and ultimately a cancerous condition of the cells and tissues."

If one has cancer, chances are pretty good that one
also has a fungal infection to one degree or another.

WASHINGTON - Eating too much sugar can eat away at your brainpower, according to US scientists who published a study Tuesday showing how a steady diet of high-fructose corn syrup sapped lab rats' memories.   Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) fed two groups of rats a solution containing high-fructose corn syrup—a common ingredient in processed foods—as drinking water for six weeks.   One group of rats was supplemented with brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids in the form of flaxseed oil and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the other group was not.   Before the sugar drinks began, the rats were enrolled in a five-day training session in a complicated maze. After six weeks on the sweet solution, the rats were then placed back in the maze to see how they fared.   "The DHA-deprived animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity," said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.   "Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier."   A closer look at the rat brains revealed that those who were not fed DHA supplements had also developed signs of resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar and regulates brain function.   "Because insulin can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, the hormone may signal neurons to trigger reactions that disrupt learning and cause memory loss," Gomez-Pinilla said.   In other words, eating too much fructose could interfere with insulin's ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar, which is necessary for processing thoughts and emotions.   "Insulin is important in the body for controlling blood sugar, but it may play a different role in the brain, where insulin appears to disturb memory and learning," Gomez-Pinilla said.   "Our study shows that a high-fructose diet harms the brain as well as the body. This is something new."   High-fructose corn syrup is commonly found in soda, condiments, applesauce, baby food and other processed snacks.   The average American consumes more than 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the US Department of Agriculture.   While the study did not say what the equivalent might be for a human to consume as much high-fructose corn syrup as the rats did, researchers said it provides some evidence that metabolic syndrome can affect the mind as well as the body.   "Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think," said Gomez-Pinilla.   "Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. Doctor after doctor will tell you that vaccinations have reduced the incidence of many infectious diseases but they have no real proof. (NaturalNews) Most people fork over the extra money for organic foods with the idea that they are doing something good for their health. In reality there are some products marked organic that may be worth the price and others that are definitely not. Today we're going to expose the latter as we uncover the truth behind organic milk.

PasteurizationThe most important factor to look at when buying milk is the pasteurization process. Pasteurization is the process of heating food to increase its shelf life. The higher the temperatures, the more micro life is killed and the longer the shelf life. The pasteurization process that most non-organic milk in the U.S. undergoes is called High Temperature Short Time (HTST). It consists of heating the milk to a temperature of 161 degrees for 15 to 20 seconds. The purpose of the this pasteurization process is to increase the shelf life and kill bacteria in the milk that could make you sick. With HTST pasteurization, milk lasts a couple of weeks at most.

While most non-organic milk undergoes this pasteurization process, the majority of the organic milk in the U.S. is ultra high temperature (UHT) pasteurized. This means it is heated to a temperature of at least 280 degrees for 1-2 seconds. This type of pasteurization kills virtually all of the enzymes and bacteria to the point that the milk cannot even be cultured to make yogurt or kefir. It is commonly referred to as "dead milk". The shelf life of UHT milk is 6 to 9 months and it doesn't even need to be refrigerated. UHT pasteurization allows organic milk to be shipped long distanced and sit on warehouse and grocery shelves for months before it needs to be sold. UHT organic milk also typically costs about twice as much as regular milk.

Why is UHT pasteurized milk so bad? The micro life that exists within milk is needed in order to properly digest and absorb the nutrients in it. Hormone replacement therapy, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for "heartburn," and asthma-control medicines are three other major drug categories that require constant use as well, even though they only address symptoms while doing little or nothing to address the underlying health problems involved. Incidentally, each of these classifications is also linked to very serious side effects.

(NaturalNews) A study that correlated exposure to sunlight with cancer risk found that people exposed to more sunlight had a significantly lower risk of many types of cancer (Lin, 2012). This study followed more than 450,000 white, non-Hispanic subjects aged 50-71 years from diverse geographic areas in the US. Researchers correlated the calculated ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure in these different areas with the incidence of a variety of cancers. The diverse sites included six states (California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina), and the metropolitan areas of Atlanta and Detroit. They followed these subjects over a period of nine years in the study and eliminated other known risk factors for cancer such as smoking, body mass index, and physical activity. This was the first prospective study (participants were actively observed for the duration of the study) to look at the relationship of sunlight to cancer.

A total of 75,000 participants In the study contracted cancer. The study found that 12 types of cancer were reduced in those subjects exposed to more sunlight. These included cancers of the lungs, prostate, pancreas, colon, thyroid and many other types. As expected melanoma and other skin cancers occurred more often in the participants exposed to more sunlight. The incidence of cancers of female organs including the ovaries, breast, and uterus were not reduced in this study, possibly because men spend more time outdoors than women. This confirmed a previous study that showed a decreased incidence of cancer in men but not women in relation to sun exposure (Grant, 2012).

This research confirms the protective effect of Vitamin D for many types of cancer. No other known factors in sun exposure would account for these findings. This provides more evidence that sun exposure is protective and that the routine use of sunscreens is counterproductive. Sunscreen should be used to prevent sunburn during prolonged exposure to bright sun at midday. Otherwise sun exposure and ultraviolet radiation promote health. Similarly, in parts of the world and times of the year with limited sun exposure taking a vitamin D supplement in adequate amounts is beneficial to the immune system, promotes bone growth, prevents cardiovascular disease, and reduces the incidence of cancer.

Trying to slim down and feeling frustrated?

If you’re giving it your all but the number on the scale still isn’t budging, you may be sabotaging yourself in spite of your best intentions.

Here are a dozen dieting don'ts to help save your weight-loss efforts.

1. You eat fake foods
We admit that prepackaged weight-loss products like shakes and bars are convenient, but they may not be helping you to lose weight in the long run.

"You never feel satisfied after you eat something like that, because it’s just a bunch of processed stuff," says Manuel Villacorta, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

There are lots of healthier, more filling options with the same or fewer calories, like a cheese stick or a serving of plain nonfat Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries.

2. You burn the midnight oil
Sure, you need to log time at the gym, but to lose weight, you also need to log time in your bed.

Skimping on sleep, especially sleeping less than five or six hours a night, can slow your metabolism and cause hormonal changes that hurt your weight-loss efforts.

Being tired may also make you eat more. One recent study found that people who are sleep-deprived consume a whopping 500 extra calories a day.

3. You exercise too much
Yes, you read that right. Exercise is important, but Villacorta maintains that being too focused on it can backfire.

"People think that if they exercise they will magically lose weight, and then they get frustrated," he cautions.

In fact, about 80 percent of dieting time and energy should be focused on nutrition and 20% on exercise, he says. "If I have a client who’s exercising six times a week, sometimes I’ll cut that in half and have them spend the extra hours shopping and planning meals."

4. You always choose the salad
Contrary to popular belief, heading for the salad bar may not be your best option.

Salads may not contain enough carbohydrates to help control hunger hormones, according to Villacorta. He suggests a healthy soup and sandwich instead, or tossing a serving of brown rice, lentils, or garbanzo beans into your greens. And beware of high-calorie salad bar additions like blue cheese and candied walnuts.

Add enough of those and "you may as well just have a burger," he says.

5. You’re a high-calorie health nut
Just because a food is healthy doesn’t mean you can eat a mountain of it.

Switching from white bread to whole wheat bread, eating nuts instead of chips, using olive oil instead of butter —these are all healthy changes. But they aren’t low-calorie substitutions, so portion control is still key.

6. You eat too early
Popular wisdom says not to eat in the evenings, but that may not make sense unless you turn in extra early.

"People eat at 6:00 and stay up until 11:00 or midnight, so their bodies are naturally asking for fuel again," Villacorta says. "I tell people to aim to eat 70 percent of their calories before dinner and 30 percent at dinner, but it doesn’t matter how late dinner is." Healthy eating in the evening can prevent a late-night binge on ice cream or cookies.

7. You’re a loner
Remember the buddy system from your kindergarten field trips? It works for dieting, too. Studies show that support from friends and family increases the likelihood that women will lose weight.

If you can’t get what you need from your nearest and dearest, other forms of support—including advice from a weight-loss counselor or encouragement from online buddies—can also do the trick.

8. You never snack
To keep your metabolism at its peak, you need to eat every three to four hours.

"People think they need to eat less frequently, but really they need to eat more often, in smaller amounts," Villacorta advises. "There’s no real reason you need to think in terms of breakfast, lunch, and dinner."

9. You don’t have a diary
One large-scale study found that keeping a daily food journal doubled the amount of weight participants lost.

Researchers speculate that simply writing down what you put in your mouth makes you more accountable and cuts your daily calories.

10. You don’t like water
Substituting water for sugary sodas and even for juices can make a major dent in your daily calorie count. Drinking water may also help you manage your appetite.

In one study, people who drank two glasses of water before eating a meal consumed up to 90 fewer calories.

11. You skip breakfast
There’s lots of evidence that people who eat breakfast tend to have healthier weights, so start the day right by making time for a morning meal.

Experts say whole-grain cereal is one of the best breakfast choices for dieters.

NaturalNews) For years Monsanto has infiltrated our islands because of our year round planting and growing cycle. Unfortunately, what they are planting and growing is detrimental to the health of anyone that consumes it.

Because of Monsanto's financial power, they succeed in "buying" state and federal politicians that regularly bend over forward for them and acquiesce to anything they say. This is evidenced by the fact that Monsanto's former attorneys, employees and okole kissers, head key government agencies.

When we go to the market, many of us read labels to make sure that we buy that which we want to eat. There are, of course, many that do not care as evidenced by the obesity epidemic we are in the midst of. Yet, we all have that opportunity. We can check calories, sodium content, fat content, sugar content, etc. The one thing we cannot check is GMO content and that right to check GMO content is presently denied to more than 90% of Americans. And why?

Because our genetically modified government does not require GMOs to be labeled.

As a result, Americans are eating GMO foods without informed consent. What's worse is that the FDA, headed by former Monsanto employees, does not require independent safety testing of these ingredients

In fact, documents uncovered in litigation show that FDA scientists believe that GMO foods could pose serious risks and need stringent testing, but their administrative superiors overruled them. As a result, the FDA has a weak "voluntary consultation" process with biotech crop developers and relies entirely on whatever data the companies choose to disclose. The FDA does not even ascertain that GMO foods are safe, but defers to "industry assurances".

The FDA's labeling policy rests on the antiquated doctrine that only changes in food that can be detected by taste, smell or other senses need to be labeled. Since GMO food differences cannot be sensed in this way, the FDA declared that GMO foods are not materially different from conventionally produced foods and no labeling is required.

This policy is entirely inadequate to deal with the changes to food that can be triggered by genetic engineering.

Potential hazards presented by GMO foods include the presence of unique toxins, elevated levels of native plant toxins, and reduced nutritional content, although it could take years or even generations, before the adverse effects of GMO foods are known with certainty.

Despite industry rhetoric about miracle "super crops", the reality is that are only "super" by their ability to withstand the endless spraying of toxic, cancer-causing herbicides (namely RoundUp Ready), thus producing an epidemic of herbicide-resistant weeds.

Mandatory labeling would give consumers the ability to make an informed choice as to whether or not the foods they choose to consume were produced in a sustainable manner.

For more than 10 years, federal GMO-labeling legislation has been introduced but has failed to pass. For more than 10 years no one in the federal government has chosen to bite the hand that feeds him or her. Maybe that's about to change. There are now 55 members of Congress that have signed a letter to support labeling of GMO products.

Hawaii is one of 14 states that wants GMOs labeled and prides itself in being in the forefront of efforts to protect the safety of our food and the health of our environment.

Recently, the state of Vermont was a breath away from passing a GMO labeling bill when Monsanto said if they passed that bill they would sue the state of Vermont. The Governor of Vermont, like all the other spineless politicians, caved in and said that he would not burden the people of Vermont with this financial hardship and would kill the bill. Yet, the people of Vermont took a different stand and are banding together in telling the governor to allow the bill to pass and are in the process of raising funds to withstand Monsanto coercion.

We, in Hawaii, are demanding that our state Legislature stop listening to the Monsanto lobbyists and instead listen to the people that elected them. Anything less would be a betrayal of the public's trust and our right to know how our food is produced.
